The High Country Herald is an independent weekly newspaper based at Highfields and delivered to all town and rural homes in the fast growing area from Toowoomba’s northern suburbs out as far as the communities of Quinalow, Maclagan and Peranga at the base of the Bunya Mountains.

The Herald distribution area includes the towns and surrounds of Highfields, Crows Nest, Kingsthorpe, Gowrie Junction, Meringandan, Oakey, Goombungee, Cooyar, Quinalow, Maclagan, Ravensbourne and Toowoomba’s northern suburb, Harlaxton.

The paper delivery covers the entire section of the Toowoomba Region council area north of the Warrego Highway. The Herald can also be read online and is available by email subscription free of charge. A hard copy subscription can be arranged for the cost of the postage. The paper is available for sale at selected newsagencies and other retail outlets in Toowoomba and throughout the circulation area.

The High Country Herald was first published as the Highfields Herald in 1999 and in its present form is the result of a merger with the long-established Crows Nest Advertiser.

Owners Neil and Ann Lomas appreciate the value that a local newspaper brings to a community, with Neil having been involved in journalism for over 50 years.

Neil’s experience in print journalism includes time with Gympie Times, Toowoomba Chronicle, Warwick Daily News (as editor), Sundowner Magazine in Gympie, and The Murgon Leader.

In 1988, under his stewardship as editor, The Warwick Daily News was named best regional daily newspaper, winning the F.W. Meacham Award.

Neil also taught journalism at the University of Southern Queensland over a period of 18 years. During his time at USQ, he was head of the journalism course and completed a Research Masters in Journalism.

A comprehensive coverage of community news and events each week makes The Herald an extremely popular publication and a valuable asset throughout the community it serves.

Contributions are received on a regular basis from organisations and sporting clubs and coverage by two experienced journalists keeps the paper up to date with important issues happening in the area.
