he Whitsunday Times is a weekly newspaper. It is available across the Whitsunday Shire including Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Jubilee Pocket, Proserpine and the Whitsunday Islands. It has been serving the community for more than 30 years and has a strong commitment to presenting local news. It is printed in Rockhampton by Rockhampton Printing and Publishing, part of APN News and Media.
ieutenant James Cook sailed the Endeavour on his exploratory voyage through the waterways of the Whitsundays in June 1770.
He named the passage of water dividing the islands after the festival of Whit Sunday, which fell on June 4 in 1770. Ultimately, fishing, logging and cattle grazing industries on the mainland and islands brought more and more people to the region.
Tourism began in the 1920s and is today the region’s largest industry. When explorer George Dalrymple first discovered the lush hills and flatlands of the Whitsunday region in 1859, he was so impressed with its bounty he named the area Proserpina, after the Roman name for the Greek goddess of fertility, Persephone.
It was not long before the township of Proserpine sprang to life, and the sugar cane industry began in the late 1800s.
