he Northern Miner was first published in August 1872, just eight months after the discovery of gold in what is now the Queensland inland regional town of Charters Towers. It was the only newspaper of five once published on the goldfields to survive the downturn in gold mining, and today it’s still being published from the same address that it’s occupied since 1878. Now serving a readership area as large as the size of Tasmania, the Northern Miner continues to deliver just what its readers want – news and information that’s relevant and useful to them.
Although Charters Towers is still a regional centre for the mining industry, there’s now a lot more than just gold in them there hills. The beef industry and education, specifically boarding schools catering to students from remote rural families, make up a big part of the local economy, and this spread of local industries also contributes to the Northern Miner’s increasingly diversified readership.
